Best Digital Cameras of 2021
Introduction
Digital Camera manufacturers struggle to escape the global economic collapse due to the ongoing pandemic. Only Travel has been harder hit than the photography industry with it being one of the primary drivers of digital camera sales for non-professionals. Professionals lost a lot of business due to canceled events and social-distancing which also diminished their purchasing power. With revenue critically down and dwindling capital, camera makers launched even fewer cameras. While 2020 saw 44 new models, only 17 were release this year.
The entire camera industry was already in recession when the pandemic hit, so release cycles had already slowed down. For this reason, the best camera to buy right now may not have been introduced this year. In this feature article showcasing the best new digital cameras, models from 2020 and 2021 are considered. Still, categories have changed slightly in accordance to what camera makes launched during 2020-2021.
The Best Digital Cameras to Buy in 2021
Neocamera selected the best cameras from 2020 and 2021 among each of the following distinct categories:
- Mirrorless: Now the most common type of digital camera, featuring large sensors up to Medium Format and interchangeable lenses. Their lack of mirror make it possible to capture top image-quality without the need for a mirror box which also allows them to capture images completely silently.
- DSLR: Classic digital cameras with large sensors and optical reflex viewfinders. These are renowned for their top image-quality, durability and efficiency.
- Premium Compact: Relatively compact, these digital cameras feature a large sensor paired with a fixed lens and efficient manual-controls. This allows them to deliver high image-quality with lower noise and superior dynamic-range compared to other fixed-lens cameras.
- Ultra-Zoom: Fixed lens digital cameras with very long zoom ranges. Those are larger than compact which allows them to pack up to 125X optical zoom or shorter ones with bright optics.
- NEW Rugged: Compact cameras designed for rough handling. These models all have fixed internal optics that allow the camera to be waterproof, weatherproof, dustproof and shockproof. Most are also freezeproof and crushproof too.
This year, the new Rugged category replaces Travel-Zoom for which no new model was introduced since 2019. This is a very interesting category which hopefully will return after people resume frequent travel. Years ago, Ultra-Compact Digital Cameras had a huge market segment but they were overtaken by cellphone that provide similar image-quality in a device that everyone already owns. The long reach of Travel-Zoom is one feature that cellphones are unable to match. Rugged cameras are in a similar position since cellphones are inherently fragile devices trying to be as slim as possible, so manufacturers rarely make rugged cellphones.
Best Mirrorless Digital Cameras
Mirrorless Digital Cameras are essentially the only mainstream market-segment remaining. Although fewer were introduced in 2021 compared to 2020, 15 out of 17 cameras launched this year were mirrorless! This is expected given that mirrorless digital cameras combine high-image quality, often using the same sensors as DSLRs, and unprecedented speed in a comparatively small form-factor.
Newly released Mirrorless Cameras span all levels of photographers from casual ones to professionals. With prices from a few hundred dollars to several thousands, recognizing a single best mirrorless camera is pointless. Therefore, the most capable mirrorless are being recognized for each of the following categories:
- Entry-Level: Cameras that produce good quality images with minimal effort in the most compact size possible.
- Prosumer: Mirrorless cameras that output high quality images with efficient controls in a compact form-factor.
- Professional Travel Photographer: Mirrorless cameras that maximize image-quality relative to their size while providing efficient ergonomics and the ability to handle any environment.
- Professional Onsite Photographer: The absolute top image quality possible for any type of photography where size is no object, weather onsite for architecture or urban photography or in a studio.
- Professional Action Photographer: Cameras that excel at capturing fast action with the best image quality.
Best Entry-Level Mirrorless 2021
Fujifilm X-S10
A third of mirrorless digital cameras introduced in 2020-2021 were entry-level models. This category welcomed substantial improvements on image-quality, performance and ergonomics. One model though clearly delivered well beyond its peers: the Fujifilm X-S10. This unique member of the X-series of APS-C mirrorless brought image-stabilization and triple control-dials in compact form-factor.
The Fujifilm X-S10
Fujifilm X-S10 leverages the same state-of-the-art 26 megapixels X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor that consistently delivers the best image-quality among cropped-sensor mirrorless. Its output shows very low noise, exceptional dynamic-range and fantastic colors. This high-speed sensor can sustain full-resolution bursts at 20 FPS and reaches 30 FPS with a 1.25X crop. Over 2 million on-sensor Phase-Detection elements form a virtual 425-Point AF system with sensitivity down to a class-leading -7 EV!
An incredible 5-axis image-stabilization system compensates for 6-stops of camera shake while only adding a little weight to the camera. This of course removes the need to use stabilized lenses which reduces the overall weight of the system. Although this is an entry-level offering, Fujifilm equipped the X-S10 with triple control-dials and nice EVF. This 2.4 MP 0.39" EVF is very sharp and shows 100% coverage at 0.62X magnification.
What distinguishes this model from the upper-range is a less durable construction with a delicate rotating hinge and a body that is not weatherproof. This affords it0 a significant weight saving. For entry-level photographers, there is no doubt that the Fujifilm X-S10
Fujifilm X-S10 is currently the best mirrorless available.
Best Prosumer Mirrorless 2021
Fujifilm X-T4
The flagship Fujifilm X-T4
Fujifilm X-T4 packs the best APS-C sensor for Mirrorless Digital Cameras and pairs it with a high-performance X Processor Pro to extract maximum performance. This 26 megapixels X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor produces superb images with very sharp details, low image noise and class-leading dynamic-range. Its builtin Phase-Detect AF system is among the best-in-class. The throughput of this sensor and processor combination allow the X-T4 to capture 20 FPS bursts of over 100 frames while maintaining a black-out-free view.
Fujifilm took longer than most camera makers to develop image-stabilization yet the X-T4 catches up with top-of-the-line cropped-sensor cameras, thanks to 5-axis stabilization mechanism that provides 6½-stops of advantage over hand-holding. With incredibly low-noise and effective image-stabilization, the X-T4 can capture images in very low-light.
This APS-C mirrorless is truly packed with features and offers ergonomics to match. Its sturdy body with fully weatherproof and freezeproof to -10C. There are dual control-dials plus direct dials for ISO, Shutter-Speed and EC for efficient controls. Its ultra-sharp 0.5" EVF offers 3.7 megapixels shown at 0.75X magnification with 100% coverage and an essential Eye-Start Sensor.
Without a doubt, the Fujifilm X-T4
Fujifilm X-T4 fits among the best mirrorless cameras on the market and is an excellent choice for photography enthusiasts and professionals.
Best Travel Photography Mirrorless
Canon EOS R5
After experimenting with mirrorless camera with little success for years, Canon finally produced a pair that Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras that leaped ahead of the competition. Both the Canon EOS R5 or its nearly identical sibling, the Canon EOS R6
Canon EOS R6, are fantastic Travel-Photography mirrorless cameras. The main difference is a 45 MP sensor on the R5, capable of recording short 8K videos, compared to 20 MP on the R6.
The Canon EOS R5
Canon EOS R5 is a high-resolution camera that delivers an exceptional performance. Its 45 megapixels Dual-Pixel CMOS sensor measures phase at every pixel to create a virtual 1053-Point Phase-Detect AF system that is sensitive down to -6 EV. Incredibly for this resolution, the R5 is capable of capturing full-resolution images at 20 FPS and sustain it for 170 JPEG images or 83 RAW files.
This sensor performance is surpassed by the superior 5-axis image-stabilization system that can compensate for 8-stops of camera shake! This is well beyond the power of any other type of image stabilization. This provides a huge benefit for travel photographers by pushing back the darkness level where a tripod becomes necessary. When a tripod is used, the Canon EOS R5 can make Bulb exposures of over 4 hours.
Canon made plenty of ergonomic improvements to the R5 while remaining inline with the existing controls. With the R5, they introduces their first triple control-dial Interchangeable Lens Camera, which is significantly more comfortable to use since two control-dials are now accessible without shifting your grip. A new incredibly sharp 5.7 megapixels 0.5" EVF with 0.76X magnification, 100% coverage and an essential Eye-Start Sensor make the R5 really comfortable to use.
What cements of Canon EOS R5
Canon EOS R5 in its spot for Best Travel-Photography Mirrorless in 2021 is the number of high-quality yet outstandingly light lenses recently launched by Canon. With a trio of weatherproof lenses spanning a 14-200mm focal-range, the system weighs in at 2.5kg which is lighter than a suitable APS-C mirrorless with equivalent lenses.
Best Onsite Photography Mirrorless
Fujifilm GFX 100S
When Fujifilm introduced the Fujifilm GFX 100
Fujifilm GFX 100, it was the most superlative digital camera ever made. This huge Medium-Format Mirrorless Digital Camera produces images with unprecedented detail and dynamic-range. The GFX 100.absolutely delivered and easily became the best digital camera for studio and location photography. Its 1.4kg weight, plus heavy lenses it requires, restricted it to situations where the photographer is mostly stationary.
The new Fujifilm GFX 100S
Fujifilm GFX 100S reaches exactly the same ultra-high-resolution with its 102 Megapixels Medium-Format CMOS sensor that captures a class-leading 16-stop dynamic-range and shaves off a whole ½kg (1 lbs) while being 6cm (2.2") shorter! The GFX 100S even includes an improved 5-axis image-stabilization system with an outstanding 6-stop of efficiency. The ultra-high resolution sensor in this mirrorless includes a hybrid autofocus system that combines 3.8 million Phase-Detection pixels with Contrast-Detection into a virtual 425-Point AF system. This sensor can capture 100 MP images at 5 FPS and record Cinema 4K video.
Fujifilm designed all their G-mount lenses to resolve 100 MP of details which allows the GFX 100 and GFX 100S to render extremely sharp images. Together with highly-detailed control over image-rendition and an extremely flexible set of bracketing modes, including 9-Frame AEB and 999-Frame Focus-Bracketing, the Fujifilm GFX 100S can capture more detail and tonality than any other camera.
This professional digital camera packs every feature required by studio and on-location photographers. This includes the requisite dual control-dials, an 8-way focus joystick, highly customizable controls and dual SDXC UHS II memory-card slots in a sturdy weatherproof and freezeproof body. To make the Fujifilm GFX 100S more compact than the GFX 100, only two specification points were set back. One is shorter 460 shot-per-charge battery-life, compared to 800, is some that can easily be solved by an extra battery. The other is a viewfinder with slightly less impressive specifications. The new 0.5" EVF is extremely sharp with its 3.7 megapixels and offers a comfortable 0.77X magnification with 10% coverage and en Eye-Start Sensor. The GFX 100 instead has a 5.8 MP 0.5" EVF with 0.86X magnification.
For the utmost image quality, the Fujifilm GFX 100S
Fujifilm GFX 100S is unbeatable. This is an incredibly powerful camera with in a surprisingly compact body. Its huge Medium-Format sensor requires proportionally large and heavy lenses, leaving the system heavy and therefore more suitable for onsite photography.
Best Action Photography Mirrorless
Nikon Z9
Flagship cameras designed for Action Photography have a long release cycle and so it is rare that three were introduced in the same year, only a few months after the Olympics. Sony launched their ultimate mirrorless the Alpha 1 in time for the Olympics but Canon and Nikon did so later. The Canon EOS R3
Canon EOS R3 and Nikon Z9
Nikon Z9 are the first action cameras from their respective manufacturer. The Sony Alpha A1
Sony Alpha A1 merged high-resolution and high-speed lines to excel at every type of photography.
All these three flagship digital cameras are outstanding yet the one that stands ahead for Action Photography specifically is the Nikon Z9. Canon take the traditional low-resolution approach and released a 24 MP Full-Frame camera without delivering more speed than the Sony A1 that captures twice the resolution! The only advantage of the R3 is its 8-stop image-stabilization system, yet this is completely unimportant when capturing fast-moving subjects. The Sony Alpha 1 offers the fastest frame-rate and slightly higher-resolution, which makes it a serious contender. Ultimately though, the Nikon Z9 wins due to its class-leading stamina.
The enormous Z9 packs an incredible amount of power. Its 45 Megapixels Stacked BSI-CMOS sensor features a global shutter that instantly captures images. It records 8K video at 30 FPS and 4K at an exceptional 120 FPS. It reaches 20 FPS at 45 MP and is capable of sustain such speed to capture 1000 RAW files, 6X more than the R3 and 10X what the A1 can manage. Its 700 shots-per-charge battery-life is over 50% more than its competitors, a crucial factor for action photographers.
There is no mechanical-shutter inside the Nikon Z9
Nikon Z9 yet it extends a physical barrier to minimize dust intrusion. Its electronic-shutter provides a wide 1/32,000s to 15 mins shutter-speed range. Since the sensor is never hidden by any shutter, the Z9 is Black-Out Free and shows the captured image live. This contrasts with black-out-free implementations of other cameras that manage by delaying the viewfinder feed. This unmatched capability gives it an edge when capturing action.
The 45 megapixels Full-Frame sensor of the Nikon Z9 is highly promising. It provides a builtin 493-Point Phase-Detect AF system with advanced 3D Tracking and Scene-Recognition, This autofocus system is normally sensitive to -6½ EV which gets extended to -8½ EV for astrophotography. Also to facilitate extreme low-light photography, most controls on the Z9 are illuminated. There is an extremely broad feature-set in this mirrorless, including a builtin next-generation positioning system (GLONASS) that records position and elevation.
The Nikon Z9 is fully weatherproof and the only freezeproof camera among this group. It sports dual memory-card slots that accept CF Express Type B or XQD cards. Dual control-dials are present on both integrated grips, plus an 8-way focus-joystick to provide the critical efficiency required by Action Photography.
Best DSLR Camera
Exactly zero new DSLR cameras were introduced in 2021 and only five were launched the previous year. While previous DSLRs remain great tools for professional photographers, most camera makers focused their efforts to produce mirrorless cameras that exceed many DSLR capabilities. While DSLRs retain advantages, new features are increasingly beyond their reach.
Image-Quality and Autofocus Performance are evenly matched between professional-grade models. Mirrorless cameras are faster and more flexible than DSLRs by now. Although battery-life is considerably better among DSLRs than Mirrorless Digital Cameras, the only notable differentiating factor is the shooting experience. DSLRs show an optical view of the a scene that looks completely natural yet differs from the final image with regards to exposure, color, white-balance and dynamic-range. State-of-the-art Electronic Viewfinders are more precise than the human eye, provide a wide immerse view and can maintain image-brightness.
The 5 DSLRs released since 2020 are:
- Canon EOS 1D X Mark III - Flagship 20 Megapixels Full-Frame Action-Photography DSLR
- Canon EOS Rebel T8i - Entry-Level 24 Megapixels APS-C 95% Coverage DSLR
- Nikon D6 - Flagship 20 Megapixels Full-Frame Action-Photography DSLR
- Nikon D780 - Enthusiast 24 Megapixels Full-Frame DSLR
- Pentax K-3 Mark III - Professional 26 Megapixels APS-C Weatherproof & Freezeproof DSLR
With the Olympics during summer 2021, both Canon and Nikon introduced new flagship action DSLRs ahead of the event. Pentax launched the most-capable APS-C DSLR ever with plenty of unique features and dramatically improved performance. Canon and Nikon added a second model in different market segments. There is very little competition between models listed above.
Without a doubt, the Pentax K-3 III reviewed here is the superior APS-C camera and no cropped-sensor DSLR comes close to it. A few mirrorless do though, particularly considering that the K-3 costs more than some Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras and weighs more. Unless someone already owns Canon EF-S lenses, there is virtually no point in getting a Rebel T8i since virtually all modern mirrorless cameras are more capable. The Nikon D780 is a great DSLR too yet it is meant as an intermediate offering. This leaves the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III and Nikon D6 to aim for the top-stop.
Best DSLR 2021
Nikon D6
The Nikon D6 is a true powerhouse designed for maximum throughput. Its 20 megapixels Full-Frame CMOS sensor captures sharp images with extremely low noise and outstanding dynamic-range. Nikon chose to omit an Anti-Alias Filter so that images retain maximum sharpness. That advantage compounds with simpler circuitry that allows the D6 to produce cleaner images than any other DSLR. Its standard ISO 100-102400 sensitivity range expands to ISO 50-3,286,000, a full 2-stops more of the 1D X Mark III.
The mechanical-shutter inside the Nikon D6 spans shutter-speeds from 1/8000s to 15 mins, plus longer Bulb exposures. Combining such fast speeds and stellar sensitivity with a 14 FPS Continuous Drive makes this DSLR ideal for Action Photography. Technically, the Canon 1D X Mark III reaches a marginally faster 16 FPS yet the cleaner output from the D6 its fast bursts more usable. A 105-Point All-Cross-Type Phase-Detect AF system with 3D Tracking maximizes chances of the D6 capturing sharp moving subjects.
Nikon packed the D6 with features. On top of all those expected from a flagship DSLR, the D6 offers 9-Frame Auto-Exposure Bracketing, 300-Frame Focus-Bracketing, 9 Frame WB Bracketing, Customizable Self-Timers, Multiple Exposure, an Interval-Timer and builtin Time-Lapse capability. Only Pentax DSLRs offer more features yet none are quite this fast. The Nikon D6 is highly weatherproof and offers illuminated controls.
An integrated vertical-grip stores a proprietary Lithium-Ion batter that provides the D6 with an incredible 3580 shots-per-charge or 25% more than the 1D X Mark III. At fast burst-rates this gives the D6 much more stamina. Both these cameras opted for Dual CF Express Type B memory-card slots to maximize bandwidth and provide redundancy required by professionals.
The Nikon D6
Nikon D6 is currently the very best camera for Action-Photography. Even though new high-speed mirrorless cameras can compete, they are yet to reach the reliability and durability of the D6.
Best Ultra-Zoom Digital Camera
Ultra-Zoom Digital Cameras take advantage of having small sensors to get an extreme telephoto angle-of-view at a fraction of the size required for the equivalent focal-length. Huge leaps in optic technology pushed the current crop of ultra-zoom to a new level. Originally, the term Ultra-Zoom applied to cameras with over 10X optical zoom, which is now available in Compact cameras. Now, many Ultra-Zooms reach over 50X!
These large cameras are running out of favor and production. The last ultra-zoom launched is the Nikon Coolpix P950, the only such camera in almost three years. This makes it the defacto winner of Best Ultra-Zoom for 2021.
Best Ultra-Zoom 2021
Nikon Coolpix P950
At 83X, this Ultra-Zoom features the second most powerful lens, behind the Nikon Coolpix P1000
Nikon Coolpix P1000 that sports an unbelievable 125X zoom! Both these cameras have lenses that start at an ultra-wide 24mm-equivalent. While the P950 reaches 2000mm, the P1000 reaches 3000mm. The only other downgrade is a smaller 0.2" EVF, compared to the 0.39" unit of the P1000. Besides this, the Nikon Coolpix P950
Nikon Coolpix P950 has been vastly improved and is a whopping 400g lighter.
The Nikon Coolpix P950 is built around a modern 16 megapixels BSI-CMOS sensor with ISO 100-6400 standard sensitivity-range, a level previously only available as Expanded ISO on the P1000. This is unlikely to produce much better images with a sensor so small yet improved image-stabilization system and slightly less dim maximum aperture towards telephoto help. The P950 also adds support for Multiple-Exposure and an Interval-Timer, plus, it has a builtin GPS.
Nikon improved usability in their latest ultra-zoom. This is the first and only ultra-zoom with triple control-dials. Its small EVF shows 100% coverage and comes with an Eye-Start Sensor. The compromise for an ultra-zoom is always image-quality yet the Nikon Coolpix P950
Nikon Coolpix P950 promises a outstanding versatility in a usable design.
Best Premium Compact Digital Cameras
Broadly, a Premium Compact is a digital camera designed for prosumers and professional photographers. These cameras offer a relatively large sensor, bright lens and complete manual controls along with external controls to make their use efficient. Only three Premium Compacts were launched between 2020 and 2021:
- Fujifilm X100V - 26 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 4 with 23mm F/2 lens
- Ricoh GR IIIx - 24 MP APS-C CMOS sensor with 40mm F/2.8 lens
- Sony ZV-1 - 20 MP 1" Exmor RS CMOS sensor with 24-70mm F/1.8-2.8 lens
The Fujifilm X100V and Ricoh GR IIIx are direct competitors, both built around an APS-C sensor paired with a bright prime lens. The Sony ZV-1
Sony ZV-1 comes with a smaller 1" sensor that makes it possible to include an optical-zoom lens, trading image-quality for flexibility. Choosing between the X100V and ZV1 would be a tough call if the Fujifilm X100V
Fujifilm X100V did not offer such absolutely superior usability, including the only viewfinder among this trio of digital cameras.
Best Premium Compact 2021
Fujifilm X100V
One must come to terms with constraints of a prime lens to appreciate the X100V. Beyond that, this Premium Compact provides a nearly impeccable performance with very few challenges. The Fujifilm X100V sports the same highly-acclaimed 26 MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor as Fujifilm flagship APS-C mirrorless cameras. It is capable of capturing minute details with very low noise and class-leading dynamic-range. The unique X-Trans Color-Filter-Array manages to avoid moire artifacts without using an Anti-Alias Filter.
Optics specially-designed for the X100V make this lens extremely compact while maintaining total edge-to-edge sharpness. A builtin Leaf-Shutter inside the lens allows for extremely fast-sync speeds and a builtin 4-stop ND filter makes it possible to use the lens wide-open even in bright light, unleashing extra creative options with additional accessories. Fujifilm packed quite a few feature in the X100V. The most notable omission though is a lack of image-stabilization to keep the camera from becoming heavy.
Ergonomics of the X100V are truly efficient. While a few buttons are either too small or in an odd location, dual control-dials, direct dials and a control-ring give this camera a highly tactile interface. The hybrid EVF unit offers the novelty of a combined optical and electronic viewfinder but truly shines in EVF mode. Its 3.7 MP 0.5" EVF is incredibly sharp, reasonably sized at 0.66X magnification and shows 100% coverage. An Eye-Start Sensor automatically turns it on.
Even among Premium cameras, the Fujifilm X100V
Fujifilm X100V stands out by its excellent image-quality, respectable speed and outstanding usability. This compact model delivers an impressive feature-set for a fixed-lens camera.
Best Rugged Digital Camera
All new digital cameras must deliver a clear advantage over cellphones to succeed in market. This is easy for cameras that sport a large sensor yet not for compact models, unless they manage to pack a long zoom or rugged construction. For this reason, the Rugged Camera category makes its debut this year. These digital cameras are fully waterproof, weatherproof, dustproof and shockproof at least. Nearly all are also freezeproof and many are crushproof too.
Rugged cameras are most often used for travel and so the pandemic had a tremendous impact on them. This is bound to change but during 2020-2021, only two such camera were launched, both by Ricoh. The newer WG-7
Pentax Ricoh WG-7 is the flagship model over the older WG-70
Pentax Ricoh WG-70 and so Ricoh decided the winner by design.
Best Rugged Digital Camera 2021
Pentax Ricoh WG-7
The Ricoh WG-7 is among the most rugged digital cameras on the market. It is as sturdy as it gets without going towards those designed for industrial application that add Chemical-Resistance such as the Ricoh G900SE
Pentax Ricoh G900SE. The WG-7 can be submerged down to a depth of 20 meters for up to 2 hours. It is freezeproof to -10C, can handle drops from 2.1m onto concrete and survive 100kg of pressure.
This rugged camera is quite compact and lightweight, being just 33m thick and weighing a mere 219g. This is very impressive for such durable construction! The heart of the Ricoh WG-7
Pentax Ricoh WG-7 is a 20 megapixels 1/2.3" CMOS sensor paired with an internal 28-140mm F/3.5-5.5 equivalent lens. This lens is completely encased behind protective glass and omits stabilization to improve sturdiness. Optics of this camera make it possible to focus at 1cm from the protective glass. To avoid casting a shadow on the subject, the lens is surrounded by 6 LEDs that evenly illuminate subjects.
The small sensor used inside the WG-7 limits image-quality but would compare to the output from a cellphone, except that his camera covers a 5X optical zoom range with fine increments. Video can be captured at 4K with an expansive depth-of-field. This camera is fitted with a builtin GPS and Digital Compass to record the position, elevation and orientation of any image at the moment of capture.
