Best Digital Cameras of 2020
Introduction
As the global economy collapsed in 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic, it ravaged the camera industry that was already experiencing a downtown for over a decade. Cameras for casual photography were largely replaced by cellphones, leaving enthusiasts and professionals to sustain the market while it reoriented itself towards high-end gear. Now, with the world under lock down, travel nearly stopped and, with it, the need for new travel photography gear. Social distancing equally decimated wedding and event photography which are traditionally a huge markets.
During 2020, the number of new camera models from all manufacturers combined was 25. This small number is inadequate to support the 1011 when counting Zeiss which launched the ZX1 in 2018 only to produce it in 2020. manufacturers still producing digital cameras. Among these new cameras, only 3 have a fixed lens and so 22 are Interchangeable Lens Cameras with only 5 DSLRs among them.
Given the above developments in the camera industry, this feature article presents new cameras that surpassed those selected as Best Digital Cameras of 2019. The best models in the following categories remain those of 2019:
- Travel-Zoom: Not a single travel-zoom was introduced in 2020.
- Premium Compact: Only two premium-compact cameras were launched in 2020, the Fujifilm X100V
Fujifilm X100V and the Sony ZV-1
Sony ZV-1. Both failed to match the incredible versatility of the Panasonic Lumix DC-LX100 II
Panasonic Lumix DC-LX100 II. - Ultra-Zoom: A single ultra-zoom came to be in 2020, the Nikon Coolpix P950
Nikon Coolpix P950 which is designed to slot itself under the flagship Nikon Coolpix P1000
Nikon Coolpix P1000. - High-Resolution DSLR: With the Olympics originally scheduled for the summer, manufacturers concentrated on high-speed low-resolution DSLRs that are designed to capture ultra-fast action. The Olympus were cancelled but Canon and Nikon each introduced a new sports flagship. They also added a low-end and mid-range offer, respectively, leaving the last DSLR announced to Ricoh which expects to ship the Pentax K-3 III
Pentax K-3 III next year.
And now, here are the Best Digital Cameras of 2020.
Mirrorless
Mirrorless Digital Cameras growth unsurprisingly slowed down in 2020. While 17 out of 25 new cameras this year were Mirrorless, this represents a 25% reduction compared to 2019. Although mirrorless cameras can offer image-quality comparable to DSLRs in a more compact, focus on a the high-end market limited gains in size compared to previous years.
From casual to professional photographers, there are Mirrorless Digital Cameras for every level. Given prices between a few hundred dollars to several thousands, recognizing a single best mirrorless has been pointless for a while and so they are divided into the following categories:
- Entry-Level: Cameras that produce good quality images with minimal effort in the most compact size. The Best Entry-Level Mirrorless remains the Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9
Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 which earned its title last year. - Prosumer: Mirrorless cameras that output high quality images with efficient controls in a compact form-factor.
- Professional Travel: Mirrorless cameras that maximize image-quality relative to their size while providing efficient ergonomics and the ability to handle any environment. The Best Professional Travel Mirrorless remains the Sony Alpha A6600
Sony Alpha A6600 which earned its title last year. - Professional General: Cameras suitable for photography of most subjects with little concern for size.
- Professional Onsite: The absolute top image quality possible for any type of photography where size is no object, wether onsite for architecture or urban photography or in a studio. Nothing new exceeded the stellar performance of the Fujifilm GFX 100
Fujifilm GFX 100 which keeps its title again for 2020. - Professional Action: Cameras that excel at capturing fast action with the best image quality. Another one holding to its title is the Sony Alpha A9 II
Sony Alpha A9 II which remains the Best Professional Action Mirrorless..
Best Prosumer Mirrorless 2020
Fujifilm X-T4
The Fujifilm X-T4
Fujifilm X-T4 leaped into 2020 as worthy successor to the excellent X-T3 reviewed here
Fujifilm X-T3 by including built-in image-stabilization to the Fujifilm X-system flagship series. This professional-grade mirrorless features a 26 megapixels 4th-Generation X-Trans APS-C CMOS sensor with 2.1 million Phase-Detection pixels! With a sensor nearly twice as large as Four-Thirds, the X-T4 delivers extremely good image-quality without much bulk.
Given its comparatively large APS-C sensor with unique X-Trans Color-Filter-Array to omit the need for an Anti-Alias Filter, the Fujifilm X-T4 produces very high-quality images with excellent rendition of details and quite low image-noise, although falling slightly short of class-leading due it a high pixel-density. Dynamic-range though is vastly superior to what Micro Four-Thirds cameras can capture. Of course, this sensor requires lenses with APS-C coverage which are considerably larger and heavier than equivalent Micro Four-Thirds ones.
Fujifilm made their 4th-Generation sensor extremely fast. Its hybrid 425-Point AF system combines both Phase-Detect and Contrast-Detect to lock focus at blazing speed while the hybrid shutter allows for 20 FPS continuous shooting at full-resolution or 30 FPS with a 16 MP 1.25X crop. In this mode, shooting is black-out free and the viewfinder optionally shows 125% coverage to frame fast-moving subjects.
This mirrorless has a highly mechanical interface that makes it particularly efficient to use with dual control-dials plus an aperture-ring on most compatible Fujinon lenses. There are direct dials for ISO, Shutter-Speed, EC and Drive Modes too, plus an 8-way joystick. It offers an extensive feature-set, including 9-frame AEB, Focus-Bracketing, Motion Panorama, an Interval Timer, Multiple-Exposure and now HDR, all in a sturdy weatherproof and freezeproof body.
All this counts to make the Fujifilm X-T4 the Best Prosumer Mirrorless of 2020. Its combination of high image-quality and speed is unmatched by a digital camera this compact.
Best Professional Mirrorless 2020
Nikon Z6 II
The market is hottest for this class of mirrorless which saw all manufacturers of Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras add a model in this category. Most new such cameras are built around a stabilized 24 Megapixels Full-Frame CMOS sensor without Anti-Alias Filter. One model among those stands out and that is the Nikon Z6 II which follows the impressive Nikon Z6 reviewed here
Nikon Z6.
The Z6 delivers an exceptional performance which is fully expected to be retained by the Z6 II which brings further improvements. The imaging pipeline retains the excellent 24 MP sensor with 273-Point Phase-Detect AF which is mounted on a 5-axis image-stabilization mechanism effective to 5-stops over hand-holding. Its standard ISO 100-51200 sensitivity range extends to ISO 50-204800 while delivering excellent image-quality with extremely low noise and a broad dynamic-range.
This mirrorless is exceptionally fast among its peers. It is capable of 14 FPS continuous drive with AF and AE locked on the first frame. This slows down to an average 5.5 FPS with continuous autofocus. A relatively deep buffer allows the Z6 II to capture 147 JPEG images or 84 RAW files per burst.
A 0.5" EVF with an ultra-sharp 3.7 MP provides an exceptionally large 0.8X magnification. There is an Eye-Start Sensor to instantly switch between the EVF and 2.1" LCD with 2.1 megapixels. Ergonomics of the Nikon Z6 II are very efficient with dual control-dials, a focusing joystick, a traditional mode-dial and plenty of customization. This latest camera adds an SDXC memory-card slot in addition to the XQD already present on the Z6.
DSLR
It looks like DSLRs have reached a performance plateau with new models offering incremental improvements over the previous. Features have also recently leveled which means that new DSLRs do not generate as much excitement as before. The best overall DSLR on the market remains the unique Pentax K-1 Mark II
Pentax K-1 Mark II which offers more features than any other while delivering exceptional image-quality performance with class-leading dynamic-range and stellar low-light performance.
Even though a DSLR can handle any type of photography, top-most models are split along two tracks. One delivers high-resolution while the other delivers high-speed. Professional DSLRs for action photography are large, even by DSLR standards, with extra power to sustains high-speed continuous shooting for long bursts. In anticipation of the new cancelled Olympics 2020, Canon and Nikon each introduced a new action-photography flagship.
The new Canon EOS 1D X Mark III
Canon EOS 1D X Mark III and the Nikon D6
Nikon D6 are remarkably similar. Both are built around a similar 20 megapixels Full-Frame High-Speed CMOS sensor with the same standard ISO 100-102,400 sensitivity range. They share a maximum 1/8000s shutter-speed, have over 100 cross-type Phase-Detect AF points, a 3.2" LCD and both offer dual grips with dual control-dials on each grip in a rugged weatherproof body.
There is no way to go wrong with the Canon 1D X Mark III or Nikon D6 and deciding between the two most likely comes down to a preference of system. Although they each have some advantage over the other, the title of Best Action DSLR must be conceded to...
Best Action DSLR 2020
Canon EOS 1D X Mark III
The Canon 1D X Mark III is the fastest DSLR yet. It can capture 20 megapixels images at a class-leading 16 FPS for over a thousand frames. Even compared to the D6, this is 10% faster and 5X times longer! Its standard ISO 100-102,400 sensitivity range can be expanded to ISO 50-819,200. Switching to Live-View, the 1D X Mark III can sustain 20 FPS. The sensor inside this DSLR uses a Dual-Pixel design unique to Canon which allows on-sensor focusing at any pixel in Live-View.
In normal use via its OVF, this Professional DSLR uses a 191-Point Phase-Detect AF system with an outstanding 155 Cross-Type points. This allows the 1D X Mark III to track fast moving subjects with great precision. It can track autofocus and exposure during continuous shooting. While this camera takes core DSLR features to the highest level, its feature-set is fairly standard. Full manual controls are obviously present, as are the 3 standards metering modes plus one Canon extra for Partial Metering. Exposure-Bracketing is supported but limited in range.
This enormous DSLR weighs over 1.2kg, a hair under the Nikon D6. Its sports an exceptionally large 0.76X magnification OVF with 100% coverage. The camera offers dual CF Express Type B memory-card slots. The standout feature of the Canon 1D X Mark III is its HEIF output captures compressed images with 30-bit color to get fine color-gradation in a manageable size. In HEIF and even in heavy RAW+JPEG mode, bursts of over 1000 frames are possible.
For Action Photography, the speed of this DSLR is unmatched. Although its image-quality is good, it does not quite match the level of its peers. The extra circuitry required for its Dual-Pixel sensor necessarily caused more noise which restricts dynamic-range. Additionally, the micro lens filter-array introduces acts as a low-level anti-alias filter which softens the finest details to reduce moire. It compensates for this in Live-View where a virtual 3869-Point AF system with over 90% coverage can track a subject anywhere across the frame. The Canon 1D X Mark III also captures Cinema 4K video at 60 FPS and can even output its entire sensor array in the form of 5.2K RAW video at 60 FPS.
