Nikon Released Second Generation Z5 Full-Frame Mirrorless

News

2025.04.03

Nikon just released an updated version of their entry-level Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera. Among the Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8 and Z9, until now only the Z6 and Z7 saw multiple generations. The new Nikon Z5 II is the first revised version of the most affordable model in the series.

Nikon Z5 II

The newest Nikon mirrorless appears very much like its predecessor with many shared headline specifications. Under this to boasts a vast number of highly significant upgrades, most notably the built-in image-stabilization system and processor which makes the Z5 II substantially faster than its predecessor. Nikon left the resolution unchanged at 24 MP which is now the most popular resolution for entry-level Full-Frame cameras.

This mirrorless camera naturally features the Nikon Z mount. Its 24 Megapixels Full-Frame High-Speed CMOS sensor boasts an standard ISO 100-51200 sensitivity range which expands to ISO 50-204800. Faster read-out allows it to capture full-resolution images continuously at 30 FPS, or 7X faster than the original Z5! The IBIS has been improved by 50%, achieving now a 7½-Stop efficiency which is comparable to the stabilization systems. A hybrid shutter mechanism gives the Z5 II a 1/8000-900s shutter-speed range, plus extended Bulb exposures of an unspecified maximum duration.

Nikon Z5 II

Even though it sports the smallest model number in the lineup, the new Nikon Z5 II is packed with features. A good number of those are generally expected by professionals. This includes dual control-dials, a huge 0.5" EVF with 3.7 megapixels that shows 100% coverage at large 0.8X magnification and paired with an Eye-Start Sensor. The camera body features dual SDXC memory card slots and is weatherproof. Among the series, both Z5 are impressively compact for Full-Frame cameras with IBIS. At 620g, the Z5 II is marginally heavier than the Z5.

The EXPEED 7 processor delivers a vastly improved autofocus performance with a class-leading sensitivity of -10 EV. This exceeds every other camera by a fair margin, allowing the Z5 II to focus in near-obscurity. The new system can automatically switch between AF-S and AF-C focus modes when the subject starts moving. It also recognizes and tracks nine types of subjects. Nikon further emphasizes the capability of this camera by providing it with Star Light and Warm Color Display modes that help with astrophotography.

Video capabilities have been improved on the Z5 II, unfortunately also introducing a minor inconvenience for photography. Instead of a tilting LCD screen which allows centered shooting from odd angles, this camera has a rotating display favored by vloggers. Indeed the practice of vlogging has increased in popularity, yet we are not certain that it justifies the downsides. On the other hand, the EVF is now a much brighter OLED unit.

The new Nikon Z5 II is expected later this month for $1700 USD or $2300 CAD. This could be very popular one, particularly for those interested in night sky photography. Luckily, Adorama and B&H Photo are already taking preorders. These reputable stores allow you to be among the first to receive the new camera!
