Sony Launches Two New Lenses at CP+2025

On day 2 of CP+2025, Sony announced two new Full-Frame lenses. While there was a rush on the first day which saw a slow of announcements, Sony held back which made them avoid being drowned by other news.

First up is the new Sony FE 16mm F/1.8G. This familiar looking lens is the widest bright G-series prime. This one captures a 107° field-of-view which is fantastic for architecture and sweeping landscapes. Even more, it is ideal for night sky photography thanks to its bright F/1.8 maximum aperture. Sony has an even wider and quite more expensive FE 14mm F/1.8GM part of the premium G-Master series.

This new lens is packed with features for a prime lens. These include a wide focus-ring, dedicated aperture ring, customizable button, iris lock and declick function, plus the usual AF/MF switch. The FE 16mm F/1.8G can focus down to 15cm automatically or 13cm manually. At 13cm, this gives it a good 0.3X magnification. As a G-series model, this lens is weatherproof. Its font accepts common 67mm screw-on filters and a petal-type lens hood.

Sony managed to keep this lens relatively compact even with its bright aperture and ultra-wide focal-length combination. The lens weighs just about 0.3kg. The company plans to ship the Sony FE 16mm F/1.8G this April for $800 USD or $1100 CAD. Both Adorama and B&H Photo are accepting pre-orders already.

Next up is the completely unique Sony FE 400-800mm F/6.3-8G OSS. This unique extreme telephoto zoom lens offers the longest reach of any zoom lens. It is the longest for Sony E-mount. The only longer lens is a prime that is exclusive to Canon RF-mount with a 1200mm focal-length. Such extreme telephoto reach is great for wildlife and birding. The downside is that this lens has a rather dim maximum aperture, so it is not ideal for fast moving subjects.

One can easily see the large number of buttons on the side of this lens. It is equipped with most features that one can imagine. A huge zoom-ring at the front allows to precisely select the focal-length with another large ring just behind to adjust focus manually. A tripod collar allows to mount this 2.5kg lens on a tripod. This lens is equipped with an optical image-stabilization system of unspecified efficacy.

Even though this lens is considerably large and heavy, it supports rare 105mm screw-on filters and comes with a windowed tubular lens hood. Its minimum focus distance is 1.7m at 400mm and 3.5m at 800mm. Somewhere in the middle it achieves a 0.23X magnification. Of course, this lens is fully weatherproof. The Sony FE 400-800mm F/6.3-8G OSS will be available next month for $2900 USD or $4100 CAD. Preorder yours from Adorama or B&Photo.
