Fujifilm First Fixed Lens Medium-Format Camera
News
2025.03.20
Just now, Fujifilm unveiled the very first fixed-lens Medium-Format Digital Camera ever made. This new model has the largest sensor and the highest resolution of any non-interchangeable lens camera, making it a totally unique offering on the market.

The unique Fujifilm GFX100RF boasts the same 102 Megapixels CMOS sensor as the flagship GFX100 II with an unparalleled dynamic-range and huge ISO 40-102,400 sensitivity range. This Medium-Format sensor offers built-in Phase-Detect AF for fast and decisive autofocus. Unlike Fujifilm's other large sensor models, the new GFX100RF uses a hybrid leaf-shutter mechanism. Its mechanical model, it can handle exposures of 1/4000s that can fully synchronize with flash. Its electronic mode can reach 1/16,000s. This camera is also capable of BULB exposures for up to one full hour.
The 102 Megapixels CMOS sensor has a 0.8X crop-factor which makes the attached 35mm lens equivalent to a 28mm on Full-Frame. Fujifilm made this lens extremely compact by designing it specifically for this fixed lens camera and providing a F/4 maximum aperture. Accounting for the crop-factor, this is equivalent to a F/3.2 lens. Together this makes the GFX100RF surprisingly light and compact, weighing just 735g. This digital camera is built to the highest standard with single-component top-plate and a weatherproof body that is freezeproof down to -10C.

Those familiar with the Fujifilm digital camera lineup will recognize familiar elements from the X-series. This camera provides a highly tactile experience with dual control-dials and direct dials for ISO, Shutter-Speed, EC and now, for the first time on a Fujifilm camera, aspect-ratio. There is also dedicated aperture and focus rings. It is designed to provide an immersive photographic experience. The sensor of the GFX100FR has a native 4:3 aspect-ratio and the new dial simply performs a centered-crop. While some cameras offer the same feature via a menu option, they are rarely worth using due to the resulting loss of resolution. of course, this camera also incurs reduced resolution with non-native aspect-ratios. However, the 102 MP of this sensor provides such resolution that the difference would rarely be observable. On the flip side, photographers can concentrate on framing their subjects at the desired aspect-ratio directly.
The Fujifilm GFX100RF is equipped with a large 5.8 Megapixels 0.5" EVF that shows 100% coverage at 0.85X magnification and comes with an essential Eye-Start Sensor. A large 3.2"" 2.1 Megapixels LCD mounted on a 3-way tilting mechanism is also featured at the back of the camera. There are plenty of advanced features on the GFX100RF, including 400% Dynamic-Range Expansion, 9-Frame Exposure Bracketing and wide array of other bracketing modes. This camera can also record Cinema 4K and Standard 4K video at 30 FPS or Cinema 2K and 1080p at 60 FPS. It offers a builtin 4-Stop ND filter, an interval timer and more. For its relatively small size, it does necessarily omit some features common in professional cameras. The most significant limitation is its lack of any form of image-stabilization. Give its 102 MP of resolution, any amount of shake is bound to impact image-quality.
This premium camera is expected to ship at the end of April for a retail price of $4900 USD or $7000 CAD. This is expected to be a short production run as Medium-Format cameras are targeted towards a small market. Those interested should preorder one as soon as possible from Adorama or B&H Photo not to miss it.
