Venus Launches 14mm F/4 Zero-D for DSLRs

Venus Optics just revealed a redesigned 14mm extreme-wide lens exclusively for DSLRs. This prime lens offers Full-Frame coverage just like its mirrorless counterpart.

The new Laowa 14mm F/4 Zero-D DSLR is one of the widest rectilinear prime lenses when mounted on a Full-Frame camera. It captures an expansive 114° field-of-view with a moderate F/4 maximum aperture. This is a manual lens with electronic aperture-reporting on Canon EF-mount and mechanical aperture-coupling on Nikon F-mount. Focusing is always manual, like other lenses from Venus Optics.

Venus Optics designed this extremely wide lens to render shapes without any distortion, which is why it bears Zero-D in its name. This is particularly difficult to achieve yet looks entirely possible from samples images shared along the press release. This allows architectural scenes to be rendered with very natural geometry despite the exceptionally wide perspective.

This Full-Frame lens is exceptionally light and impressively compact thanks to an F/4 maximum aperture. At just 360g, this is one of the lightest extreme-angle lens on the market. It even manages to sport a 67mm filter-thread which is useful to mount ND-filters required to catpure long light-trails. A simple 5-blade aperture gives a highly geometric rendering to lights that split into 10-point stars.

With a minimum focus-distance of 14.5cm, the Laowa 14mm F/4 Zero-D DSLR is capable of 0.3X magnification, which is rare for an ultra-lens. An internal focusing system allows this lens to stay balanced throughout its focus-range. A bayonet mount supports a petal-type lens hood, supplied with the lens, which is generally required with such wide lenses when capturing night scenes.
