Nikon Reveals Z 28-75mm F/2.8 Constant-Aperture Zoom
News
2021.12.14
A new bright constant-aperture zoom lens was just added to the standard Z-mount series of affordable lenses for Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Cameras. Nikon started their latest mirrorless platform with a focus on high-end optics with the S-series of premium lenses. Most of their native Z-mount lenses belong to that series yet they did introduce a few lighter models that are not held to the same level of quality. A really appreciated move is that Nikon resisted the temptation of omitting weather-sealing from their standard range, making them useful to every photographer and a great alternative for Travel Photography that benefits from lighter lenses.
The new Nikon Z 28-75mm F/2.8 offers a constant maximum aperture for its standard wide-to-medium range. It manages to reach an unusually high 0.34X maximum magnification which adds to its versatility. The design of this lens fits nicely within the range. An extra large zoom ring makes it easy to precisely control focal-length while a fly-by-wire control-ring can be used for manual-focus and a few other functions.
This zoom comes with a bayonet-mount for a standard petal-type lens hood and has a 67mm filter-thread at the front. Switching between autofocus and manual-focus must be done on-camera since there are no buttons on the Z 28-75mm. The main benefit of this lens is its exceptionally light weight for a bright zoom. Nikon already has a Z 24-70mm F/4S which is in-fact lighter yet the Z 24-70mm F/2.8S is 33% heavier than the new Z 28-70mm F/2.8 which gives up on ultra-wide coverage to reduce weight. Most buyers will find themselves deciding to get the Nikkor Z 24-120mm F/4S or the new Nikkor Z 28-75mm F/2.8. These lenses have a similar weight and trade brightness for range.
Availability is scheduled for early 2022 when the Nikon Z 28-75mm F/2.8 is expected for $1200 USD or $1500 CAD.
