Leica Launches SL3-S

Legendary camera manufacturer Leica just announced a new Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera today. The new Leica SL3-S features a Leica L-mount which is also by cameras from Sigma and Panasonic too.

The Leica SL3-S is built around a new 24 megapixels High-Speed CMOS sensor mounted on a 5-axis image-stabilization mechanism. This sensor is the fastest Full-Frame sensor from Leica. While 30 FPS is impressive, it pales in comparison to the 120 FPS maximum speed of the Sony Alpha A9 III. Several other models also offer 30 FPS and a two Canon RF-mount models reach 40 FPS.

The Full-Frame sensor in the SL3-S has a sensitivity range of ISO 50-200,000 plus a hybrid shutter that spans 1/16000s-60s speeds. This is controlled by triple control-dials with the third one appearing on the left shoulder of the camera, likely a first and certainly an odd choice! Leica added a 779-Point Phase-Detect AF system directly on the sensor, for the first time on a Leica mirrorless. Oddly, the efficiency of the IBIS system is unspecified.

As expected for a Leica, this camera is exceptionally rugged, earning an IP54 weatherproof rating. It is both dustproof and freezeproof down to -10C as well. The headline 30 FPS drive mode is supported by asymmetric memory card slots, one SDXC UHS-II and another CF Express Type B. The latter should allow for longer bursts yet Leica does not specify any buffer-depth for continuous drive modes.

This new mirrorless is highly capable for video capture. It supports up to 6K video at 30 FPS and 4K Ultra-HD at 60 FPS. This is the highest speed among Leica cameras yet does not stand out even against models that are already 6 years old. All this unfortunately makes this pricey camera already out-dated and surrounded by plenty of equally capable models for half-the-price. For those interested in the Leica name, the SL3-S is expected to ship for $5300 USD later this year.
