Nikon 1 J3 Summary
Nikon 1 J3 Assessment
The Nikon 1 J3 is a compact SLD with a unique 14 megapixels sensor which provides ultra-fast Phase-Detect autofocus, continuous shooting up to 60 FPS and full 1080p HD video. The J3 packs this into an very compact and sturdy body which features a single control-dial.
Image quality of this mirrorless depends on what it is compared against. Its 2.7X crop-factor sensor puts it well ahead of of most fixed-lens cameras but also behind the majority of mirrorless ones, including its predecessor, the J2
Nikon 1 J2 which uses larger pixels in its 10 megapixels sensor.
Still, the J3 produces clean images up to ISO 400 and usable results until ISO 6400 for small prints. Metering, color and white-balance are all quite good. The most impressive aspect of the J3 is its speed. Autofocus and stutter-lag are class-leading with very good shot-to-shot speeds as well. Unfortunately, a ¾s delay when starting to record video happens but this is the only time one has to wait for the J3.
In short, the Nikon 1 J3 leads in terms of speed while placing itself right between most compact and most mirrorless cameras for output quality. This makes it one of a few mirrorless ones that can actually handle action photography, at least down to moderate light levels.
