Fujifilm X-H2 Samples
Fujifilm X-H2 Comparative Crops
The Fuji X-H2 sports the highest-resolution APS-C sensor ever made, one that is also used in the Fujifilm X-T5
Fujifilm X-T5. This 40 MP sensor delivers 50% more resolution than previously possible on a cropped-sensor. Full-Frame cameras commonly offer such high resolution which is required for 8K video capture.
Below, the X-H2 is compared to the Canon EOS R5
Canon EOS R5, an 8K-capable 45 Megapixels Full-Frame Mirrorless. The R5 is much more expensive than the X-H2 due to its sensor-size. Nevertheless, it is interesting to show the difference between state-of-the-art sensors of different sizes. All images below are 100% unmodified crops from their respective cameras. Both cameras were set on aperture-priority mode with fixed ISO. The remaining settings were left on automatic. Cameras were each independently calibrated to deliver optimal image quality.
These crops help determine which ISO sensitivities are acceptable to used on these cameras. Most cameras compensate with noise reduction as noise increases but this introduces softness. The point at which a print becomes unacceptably noisy is a matter of personal taste.

The 100% crops above show that Fujifilm produced an outstanding sensor with very low noise that rivals the larger Canon sensor. At low sensitivities, even up to ISO 800, the 40 Megapixels APS-C X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor of the Fujifilm X-H2 produces superior images that can be printed larger than the 45 Megapixels Full-Frame Dual-Pixel CMOS sensor of the Canon EOS R5. One key point to understand is that the R5 has a sensor with 2¼X the surface area yet each photosite is only slightly larger since two are needed per pixel for a Dual-Pixel sensor.
ISO 1600 is where the Canon EOS R5 pulls ahead. Noise levels are similar yet contrast and detail are better preserved. Above that, the Full-Frame comfortably out-performs the APS-C mirrorless. Much larger prints are possible with the R5 at High-ISO with a usable range reach ISO 12800 or 25600, depending on print-size.
