Fujifilm X-H2 Summary
Fujifilm X-H2 Assessment
The hybrid Fujifilm X-H2, a second for X-mount, delivers a huge jump in features and video capabilities compared to the original Fuji X-H1
Fujifilm X-H1. Its 40 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, the only APS-C chip capable of 8K video capture, launched with the X-H2.
Image quality from the new 40 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor is really impressive at low ISO, allowing prints up to 30" x 20" from an APS-C camera for the first time. It shows very low noise and renders the finest details up to ISO 400. Dynamic-Range is also excellent. At ISO 800 and above, there is an expected decline in image-quality, so the X-H2 is best used in good light.
Video quality is truly excellent. 8K video captures an incredible amount of detail with deep color and low compression artifacts. Video output in 4K HQ mode is even better. Many codecs and bitrates are available to produce video files with different quality. The X-H2 has good heat management to record for extended lengths.
This hybrid mirrorless packs a state-of-the-art 5-axis image-stabilization system that provides 7-stops of efficiency. The X-H2 is a feature rich camera with an outstanding level of customization. Its controls are well laid out yet are soft which causes frequent accidental changes. Its body is solid except for a fragile rotating LCD hinge but its angular shape gets uncomfortably after prolonged use.
A new hybrid shutter mechanism reaches the fastest shutter-speed of any digital camera. Autofocus is also immediate and highly accurate with reliable tracking capabilities. Shutter lag is instant for both images and video. Some functions are slower than average but the X-H2 is fast when it counts the most.
The unique Fujifilm X-H2 delivers outstanding video features, yet it clearly brings some compromises for photography. For those who start producing 8K video, the X-H2 is a good camera to consider. Without the need for 8K, there are other Fujifilm mirrorless models that offer better performance, superior ergonomics while being more compact, lighter and cheaper, most notably the X-T4
Fujifilm X-T4.
