Sony Unveils Their Brightest Zoom Lens

Along with the announcement of the flagship A1 II, Sony released their brightest zoom lens to date. The new lens is a professional level offering with a Full-Frame imaging circle which makes it compatible with the A1 II.

The new Sony FE 28-70mm F/2 G Master is exceptionally bright zoom lens. This is the first such lens from Sony, matching a similarly specified Canon lens for their RF system. No other constant-aperture zoom lens with an F/2 aperture exists for Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras. They do exist for smaller sensors and for Full-Frame DSLRs.

What sets the Sony FE 28-70mm F/2 GM appart is that it is significantly lighter than competitors. At 918g, it is 50% lighter than the Canon equivalent. The lens is necessarily large though since there is no way to reduce the size required for it to gather so much light. Its diameter is 93mm across, only marginally less than the Canon. The front of this lens accepts rare and expensive 86mm screen-on filters. A special windowd petal-hood is provided with the lens to allow rotating a mounted polarizing filter.

This lens has triple rings: Focus, Zoom and Aperture. A switch can declick the aperture ring, while another locks the iris. Uniquely to this lens, there is a Zoom Torque switch which control the resistance of the zoom ring. This is an ultra-premium lens and is weatherpoof, as expected. It also arrives at an unsurprisingly high price too: $2900 USD or $4000 CAD. It is scheduled to arrive next month.
