Sony Digital Wireless Microphone

Sony just announced a digital wireless microphone and compact stereo lavalier microphone that connects to it. This new pair of microphones offer digital audio transmission for extreme clarity and protection from interference.

The Sony ECM-W2BT attaches to the Multi-Interface Hot-Shoe available on many Sony digital cameras. Their newest Alpha 1 flagship, the A7C and ZV-1 vlogging camera all support an interface to connect digitally to the new ECM-W2BT. Legacy cameras are also supported via a standard 3.5mm analog mini-jack. Communication between the transmitter and receiver is always digital which can connect up to 200 meters appart.

Both the transmitter and receiver feature an omni-directional capsule microphone which allows recording of the camera operator and another speaker across the supported transmission range. Sound recording can switch between the receiver, transmitter or a mix of both. An embedded attenuator allows the W2BT to filter out loud noise.

A wired lavalier microphone was also launched. The new Sony ECM-LV1 is a compact stereo microphone which attached via a standard 3.5mm analog stereo cable. It can attach the the transmitter of the ECM-W2BT and transmit digitally, even when both are connected via an analog cable to their respective components. The ECM-LV1 has a flexible clipping attachment that rotates for convenience.

Together these new microphones further improve audio capabilities of Sony digital cameras. Both are scheduled for availability next month. The Sony ECM-W2BT is priced at $230 USD or $300 CAD, while the Sony ECM-LV1 will be $30 USD or $40 CAD.
