Sigma Creates Brightest Extreme Wide Lens

Just now, Sigma Photo unveiled a new addition to their Art series of premium lenses. This is one of the most well regarded family of lenses around. Joining an extensive lineup is the Sigma A 14mm F/1.4 DG DN, a Full-Frame prime lens with unprecedented brightness of its angle-of-view.

This completely new prime brings the brightest aperture of any extreme wide-angle lens. With its maximum F/1.4 aperture, it exceeds the F/1.8 possible with the Sony FE 14mm F/1.8 GM which itself eclipsed the competition at the time of its launch. These lenses are ideal for astrophotography and low-light interior photography.

The Sigma Art 14mm F/1.4 DG DN is designed with Full-Frame coverage, allowing it to capture a 114° angle-of-view that very few rectilinear lenses can match. Its extremely bight F/1.4 maximum aperture is made a 11-blade iris to render smooth out-of-focus areas. With a minimum focus-distance of 30cm, this 14mm F/1.4 provides a 0.08X maximum magnification. An internal focusing system allows this lens to focus quickly and quietly while its fixed-length maintains its center of gravity.

As a premium lens, the Art 14mm F/1.4 DG DN is packed with features. It sports both an aperture and focus ring, plus an aperture-lock, a focus-lock, declickable aperture and focus mode button that supprts standard AF/MF and DMF operation. The aperture-ring steps through the F/1.4-F/16 range in 1/3 stops or hands-over aperture control to the attached camera. The body of this lens is fully dust and splash resistant, while the front element has a water and oil repelling coating applied.

Sigma Photo promises exceptional image-quality with edge-to-edge sharpness and low optical distortion. This is a no-expense-spared design and gives the Art 14mm F/1.4 lens a 10cm diameter with a 15cm length. This lens weighs a hefty 1.2kg which is expected for a bright ultra-wide lens. Both Sony E and Leica L mount versions are expected this month for $1600 USD.
