Panasonic Adds Light-Weight L-Mount Prime Lens

Panasonic entered the Full-Frame Mirrorless market with a series of rather large high-end cameras and matching optics. This allowed them to pack a huge number of features into very durable cameras with great ergonomics. Having expanded into the mid-range market with the recent and highly compact Panasonic Lumix S5, the need for matching lenses became apparent.

Today, Panasonic unveiled their first lightweight L-mount prime lens. The new Panasonic Lumix S 85mm F/1.8 provides a classic portraiture focal-length with a bright 9-blade aperture to capture plenty of light and produce nicely blurred background. Although not labelled a Pro lens, this lens offers a weatherproof construction.

This lens has a simple barrel with a wide focus-ring and standard AF/MF focus-switch. Focusing is internal to keep the size of the lens constant. The front element is threaded to accept 67mm filters and has a bayonet to attach a lens hood. The S 85mm F/1.8 is relatively light at 355g. This full-frame lens also manages to come in at a low price of $600 USD.
