Nikon Launches First Z-Mount Macro Lenses

The Nikon Z-system just got their first two Nikkor macro lenses! Two new Micro lenses were unveiled today and both are compatible with all Z-mount mirrorless digital cameras.

The Nikkor Z MC 50mm F/2.8 is a true Macro lens capable of 1X magnification. This compact prime has a 46° angle-of-view when mounted on a Full-Frame camera. It offers a typical F/2.8 aperture for a macro lens yet is extremely light, weighing a mere 260g.

Even though Nikon describes the image-quality of this lens as top-notch, it is interesting to note that this is the only first-party Z-mount lens without the S-series designation. Up to now, all Nikkor Z-mount lenses were part of that high-end series. Despite this, the new MC 50mm F/2.8 is weatherproof. Unlike S-series lenses, this one does not support a lens-hood, although it does accept 46mm filters.

A second Micro lens unveiled today is part of the premium S-series. The new Nikkor Z MC 105mm F/2.8S VR sports builtin image-stabilization effective to 4½-stops for use on the Nikon Z50, the only APS-C mirrorless with a Z-mount and the only one lacking IBIS. This could possibly indicate that Nikon will continue to grew their APS-C mirrorless offerings.

The MC 105mm F/2.8S VR is a full-featured premium lens. It sports a customizable control-ring, an OLED display, custom button and Focus-Limiter. Expect stellar image-quality from this lens. Macro lenses with a long focal-length tend to have near perfect optical reproduction. This one also manages 1X magnification.

Both lenses are expected next month. The MC 50mm F/2.8 comes with a suggested price of $650 USD or $880 CAD, while the MC 105mm F/2.8S VR will go for $1000 USD or $1350 CAD. These essential lenses are expected to sell-out quickly, so we suggest to pre-order them from reputable sources:
