Nikon D780 Full-Frame DSLR and Camera #1000
News
2020.01.07
With the launch of the Nikon D780 today for CES 2020, Neocamera just added the one thousandth digital camera to our extensive Camera Database! This is a huge milestone that shows just how many digital cameras were produced in 15 years even when the market has been contracting. Lens have been growing a a faster rate with over 1500 lens from major optics companies.
The newest digital camera to join the Nikon lineup of DSLRs is the D780. This high-end DSLR is built around a 24 megapixels Full-Frame BSI-CMOS sensor with high sensitivity, offering a Standard ISO range of 100-51200, expandable to ISO 50-204,800, which is two full-stops ahead of its predecessor, the Nikon D750 reviewed here. Although they share a nearly identical layout, with only minor shuffling for buttons on the back, the imaging pipeline of the D780 received a significant upgrade.
During normal photography, the Nikon D780 uses a dedicated 51-Point Phase-Detect AF system, just like the D750. For Live-View which extends to Video Capture, this new DSLR offers 273 on-sensor Phase-Detection points. This allows much smoother AF during video which the D780 can record at 4K Ultra-HD resolution with a frame-rate of 30 FPS. At Full HD though, this camera captures up to 120 FPS. This new addition to the sensor, makes this DSLR a much better hybrid tool for photo and video.
As anyone would expect from this level of camera, the D780 is feature-rich and acquires most functionality of the D750 and Z6 mirrorless, except for builtin image-stabilization. This DSLR can shoot full-resolution images at 7 FPS and record results to its dual SDXC memory-card slots. It offers dual control-dials and a 100% coverage OVF with 0.76X magnification in a weatherproof body. Power consumption was highly optimized and the D780 can record upwards of 2800 shots-per-charge now!
The new Nikon D780 will ship later this month for $2300 USD or $3200 CAD. Expect it to be highly popular given that is is replacing an 2014 model, so hurry and pre-order one to secure it! Both Adorama and B&H Photo are accepting pre-orders and will not charge your credit-card until the camera ships.
