Fujifilm Launches X-H2 Plus 2 New Lenses
News
2022.09.08
Fujifilm jumped the competition to deliver by far the highest resolution cropped-sensor digital camera ever. Their newest camera boosts resolution by a whopping 50% while also improving upon image stabilization and adding plenty more improvements.
The new Fujifilm X-H2 brings to life the first 40 megapixels APS-C sensor which is sufficient to make this the first cropped-sensor camera capable of recording 8K video! An entirely new processing pipeline combines the 40 MP X-Trans BSI-CMOS 5HR sensor with an also new X-Processor 5 to handle the huge amount of throughput generated by the X-H2. A hybrid shutter combines a 1/8000s mechanical shutter with the fastest electronic one on the market, reaching a blazing 1/180,000s to freeze the fastest motion.
Fujifilm has steadily been improving their image-stabilization system and the one in the X-H2 can compensate for 7-stops over hand-holding using its 5-axis mechanism. Combined with a broad ISO 125-12800 sensitivity range that expands to ISO 64-51200, the Fujifilm X-H2 can capture scenes in all sorts of lighting conditions. Its Bulb mode can expose for a full hour, while semi-automatic and fully manual modes handle exposures as long as 15 minutes.
The durable mechanical shutter in the X-H2 can operate continuously at 13 FPS and has a life-expectancy above 500,000 actuations. Using its ground-breaking electronic-shutter, this mirrorless can record at 20 FPS with a 1.3X crop factor. Regardless of the continuous speed, this camera captures over 1000 JPG or RAW files per burst. As with other Fujifilm flagship cameras, the X-H2 supports HDR, an Interval-Timer, Multiple-Exposure and six types of bracketing.
Video enthusiasts will be equally impressed. The Fujifilm X-H2 can record 8K video at 30 FPS as MPEG-4 or Quicktime video directly to a CF Express Type B card. It also handles 8K RAW output via HDMI. A huge number of resolution and frame-rates are on offer, including 6K video at 30 FPS and 4K video at 60 FPS. When recording Full-HD video, the X-H2 can film at an impressive 240 FPS.
Externally, the Fujifilm X-H2 resembles the X-H2S. It comes in a nearly identical weatherproof and freezeproof body with dual control-dials and an 8-way focus joystick. Its builtin EVF is among the best in the market with a 5.8 megapixels of resolution, 100% coverage, 0.8X magnification and an essential Eye-Start Sensor. A 3" rotating touchscreen with 1.6 MP at the back provides an extra option for framing.
The Fujifilm X-H2 is expected to become available this month for $2000 USD or $2500 CAD. Along with this new digital camera, Fujifilm launched a new X-mount prime lens and a new G-mount zoom.
The Fujifilm Fujinon 56mm F/1.2R WR is now the third X-mount lens with exactly the same focal-length and F/1.2 maximum aperture. This is the first iteration to carry WR in its name, signifying that this is a weatherproof lens. Its basic characteristics remain unchanged. This is an extremely bright lens with a focal-length that is ideal for portraits and is roughly comparable to an 85mm F/1.4 lens for Full-Frame cameras.
Lastly, a new GFX lenses enters the lineup of Medium-Format lenses that can handle over 100 megapixels. This new Fuifilm Fujinon GF20-35mm F/4R WR is an ultra-wide zoom with Medium-Format coverage, similar to a 16-35mm for Full-Frame yet with a narrower focal-range. This is a premium lens because every Medium-Format lens must be. It is fully weatherproof and built to capture the finest detail.
Like the X-H2, the Fujifilm XF56mm F/1.2R WR is coming in the next few weeks. It will carry a suggested retail price of $1000 USD or $1275 CAD. Following that, in October, the Fujifilm GF20-35mm F/4R WR is expected for $2500 USD or $3200 CAD.
