DxO Marks 3 Canon DSLRs
News
2018.06.06
Earlier today DxOMark published scores for 3 different Canon APS-C DSLRs. They range from entry-level to mid-range with staggered generations of Canon CMOS sensors.
First up is the Canon EOS 4000D, the most basic DSLR ever produced by any brand. This compact and lightweight plastic camera even uses plastic for its EF-S lens mount and offers a tiny cropped optical viewfinder. The 4000D features a 18 megapixels CMOS sensor paired with an aging DIGIC-4+ processor. The result is a paltry DxOMark score of 63, giving it the same score as the 10 years-old Sony Alpha 200! By comparison, the entry-level Nikon D3400 scores an 86. The 4000D score breaks down into 21.9 bits of color-depth, 11.4 EV of dynamic-range and a High-ISO score of 695.
Canon's EOS 2000D, also known as the Rebel T7 in the Americas, was introduced at the same time as the 4000D, also as an entry-level offering but with a metal lens mount and more modern 24 megapixels APS-C CMOS sensor. This one manages a better DxOMark score of 71 which places it just below the 8+ years old Pentax K-x. With 22.6 bit-depth, 11.9 EV of dynamic-range and 1009 ISO score, it is definitely a step above the 4000D, yet just cannot compete with modern offerings, unless it comes at a much lower price-point.
The third camera rated is last year's Canon EOS 77D which is a mid-range DSLR aimed it amateurs. It is slight more efficient to use than the other two, given it offers dual control-dials. Unfortunately, it also has a cropped viewfinder which makes precise framing impossible. The EOS 77D delivers a much higher DxOMark score of 78 that puts it in 29th place among APS-C DSLRs. This is pretty much the limit of Canon sensor technology with only the EOS 80D and EOS 200D scoring better for the brand.
The Canon EOS 77D gets a 23.6 bit-depth, 13.3 EV of dynamic-range and 971 points for High-ISO. This last score is really what drags the camera down but dynamic-range is at least quite good. Those who are loyal to the Canon brand really have a decent mid-level performance here.
