Canon Updates Powershot G1 X

At CP+, Canon unveiled their second large-sensor compact. The redesigned Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II boasts a brighter 24-120mm F/2-3.9 lens while keeping the same 1.5" sensor-size as its predecessor. This makes it one among very few large-sensor compacts with a zoom lens and brightest one at the telephoto end by over one full stop.

The G1 X Mark II is smaller than its predecessor while providing even more external controls, including dual control-dials, plus a second lens ring for focusing manually. While it does lose the optical tunnel viewfinder, it gains the ability to use an optional EVF, also a rare feature among fixed-lens cameras.

This premium camera obviously features full manual-controls, including custom white-balance and choice of metering patterns. Its high-speed CMOS sensor captures full-resolution images at 5.2 FPS and can record 1080p HD video at 30 FPS.

The Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II is schedule to ship this April for $799 USD or $849 CDN. No word on availability or pricing for the optional EVF though. B&H Photo and Adorama are already accepting pre-orders for those who want to get it first.
