Canon Introduces Low-Cost Full-Frame Mirrorless

Canon recently took the wraps off their second Full-Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera. The new arrival is part of their RF platform and introduces the most affordable full-frame digital camera yet.

The Canon EOS RP is built around a 26 megapixels Dual-CMOS sensor with Phase-Detection at every pixel. The sensor is paired with a relatively fast Digic 8 processor that can record 4K Ultra-HD video and shoot continuously at 5 FPS until the memory card gets full of JPEG or for 50 RAW files. This is matched with a traditional mechanical shutter with 1/4000-30s shutter-speed range, while the sensor has an ISO 100-40,000 normal sensitivity range, expandable to ISO 50-102400.

As one expects from a full-frame camera, the EOS RP offers dual control-dials and a full manual controls. The camera is equipped with a moderately-sized 0.39" EVF with 2.4 megapixels and 100% coverage while showing a large 0.7X magnification. There is also a 3" LCD touchscreen at the back. This mirrorless is exceptionally light at just 440g, is the lightest full-frame digital camera on the market.

The RP is being introduced with the lowest price of any full-frame digital camera which is a bold and highly welcome move in itself. As the digital camera market has been shrinking, manufacturers responded by increasing the average selling price of cameras and high-end ones in particular have been soaring to new levels of expensive.

Canon entered the full-frame digital camera market with an aggressively priced EOS R and now is going to bring price pressure with the new Canon EOS RP that will sell for $1300 USD starting next month.
